DNV’s ETO reports
DNV is the world’s leading testing, certification, and technical advisor to the energy sector, covering oil and gas, renewables, and power infrastructure. It is also a major certification body for quality and environmental management (ISO standards), healthcare, food and beverage, and supply chains.
DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook is a series of science-based energy reports, forecasting the global and regional trajectory of energy transitions. The reports project the changes in the energy mix in both supply and demand to 2060.
The ETO offers a single “best estimate” forecast of the most likely energy future, not the future that policymakers or industry would ideally want. It reflects real-world inertia, policy trends, and technology costs rather than aspirational targets. The ETO is designed as a strategy-forming tool for analysts, policymakers, investors, and industry decision makers.
Our dedicated DNV team has been a part of the DNV ETO evolvement since 2018, designing a great number of ETO reports, ranging from the Main ETO Report covering all 10 regions, to smaller reports covering specific topics, such as Hydrogen, CCS, and New Power Systems. In addition, we have designed regional ETO reports for a number of countries.
Our task is to transform complex and often technical information into structured, clear, and engaging reports, and at the same time stay true to DNV’s visual identity, look and feel.
The Main ETO Report
Every year DNV launches its flagship, the main ETO Report. This report presents DNV’s forecast of the likely evolvement of the worlds energy systems through to 2060, both locally and in 10 world regions. The reports are launched every year in October in a live-streamed event, from a rotating international City, with as many as 15,000 signing up for the event.
The 2026 Main report will be the 10th in a row, and we have had the honour of producing nine of these. Until 2022 the ETO reports were primarily designed for print, provided online as pdfs with some degree of interactive navigation. From 2023 the reports were redesigned for screen-viewing primarily, with more extensive navigation, and better screen readability. Only a much shorter A4 Executive Summary is now printed for handouts at the launch event.

The regional ETO reports
In addition to the ETO Main report, a number of countries have issued their own national reports. Thematically these reports mirror the Main Report, but on a detailed, national scale, focusing on local challenges, opportunities and politics. Some of these local reports are designed in the digital landscape format, and some in A4 as they are printed for local launch events.
Thematical ETO reports
Every year DNV launches at least one ETO report on a specific energy-related topic, such as Transport, CCS, New Power Systems and Hydrogen. In addition, DNV has issued the ETO Pathway to Net Zero Emissions repots. This is DNV’s analysis of what they believe to be a plausible, but very challenging, pathway to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, which is needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
Infographics
For the DNV ETO reports much of the findings are illustrated and explained through the use of figures and infographics. The DNV style is to use simple 2D line infographics with no perspective, sometimes supplemented with filled shapes. We have created numerous graphs, illustrations and infographics over the years, helping the reader to navigate through complex messages and findings.
